About:

Cliff KarmiohlI am a Licensed Psychologist-Doctorate who specializes in working with children and adolescents. I have been in practice in Vermont for approximately 25 years. I received my Doctorate in Psychology from the University of Virginia, and completed an American Psychological Association approved Post-Doctoral program at Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as an American Psychological Association approved internship at a residential treatment center for children.

While each individual I work with brings with them their own unique concerns, my work with children and adolescents typically includes providing individual psychotherapy to the child as well as providing guidance and support to the child’s parents to help them best manage their child’s behavior and/or emotional challenges.

The psychotherapy I provide is psychodynamically informed and incorporates strategies derived from both cognitive-behavioral and family-systems therapies. I have found the combination of these approaches to be the most resistant to relapse:

• The psychodynamically informed psychotherapy aims at uncovering and resolving emotional conflicts that may underlie the child’s behavioral and/or emotional difficulties.
• The cognitive-behavioral aspect of the therapy focuses on managing the child’s behaviors and emotions at home and at school.
• The family work focuses on implementing these strategies in the home and aims at identifying family dynamics that might be aggravating the child's behavior and/or emotional difficulties.

I typically provide consultations to educators, tailoring suggestions to best manage each child who has behavioral or emotional difficulties while at school. If needed, I may assist educators both in developing and implementing a behavior plan for the child. When medical interventions are necessary, I work in conjunction with the prescribing physician to assure that the minimal medication trial necessary is achieved.
