Elizabeth Slater
My vision for the therapeutic journey is that of a mutual, relational venture in which we look together to understand difficulties, often based in the past, and find greater freedom to respond differently in the present. A teacher once said we relearn therapy with each new patient. i adhere to this looking belief, looking for fresh and spontaneous ways to connect in each situation. I try to facilitate expansion in both our internal worlds and external reality. My style is warm, active and engaged.
In terms of my background, I earned a PhD from Adelphi University's Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies in 1981 and completed a postdoctoral certificate from the Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in 1987, also from the Derner Institute. After practicing psychotherapy and teaching for many years in New York City, i relocated to Boston's western suburbs, where i have a private practice working with adults, adolescents and children. I have had teaching and supervisory responsibilities at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis, the Boston Institute for Psychotherapy and the Psychoanalytic Couple and Family Institute of New England. I am also Chair of the Stechler Child and Adolescent Therapy Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis.
