Gregory Thomson PhD
I have provided clinical services in CA and MI to adults, children, adolescents, and families for over 20 years in school, correctional, nonprofit family counseling, day treatment, private practice, chemical dependency, and inpatient psychiatric hospital settings. My clinical and research training was mentored by AIU professor, Kevin J. O'Connor, Ph.D., co-founder of the International Play Therapy Journal and the International Association for Play Therapy.
My clinical activities have included child/family play therapy, adult/child/adolescent individual therapy, family therapy, Family Court mediation counseling, post-divorce co-parenting support, counseling to gay/transgender youths and their parents, helping children and their families confront autism spectrum disorders, social anxiety, ADHD (ADD), OCD, bipolar disorder, child neuropsychological disability evaluation, crisis intervention, and early intervention program consultation.
I value helping others navigate shyness, loneliness, depression, loss, and grief. I also work with writers, musicians, and theater performers regarding performance anxiety and working-through "creative blocks." As our area has many great universities, I offer help to students wanting to develop friendships, weather emotional challenges, and successfully navigate academic goals.
I try to help people develop social skills which balance their own needs and boundaries with those of others. I use a family systems orientation and prescriptive cognitive-behavioral approach to select strategies best suited to meet your individual or family’s goals.
Memberships: APA, CA Psych Assoc, IOCDF, Assoc 4 Play Therapy, CA Assoc 4 Play Therapy, Bay Area LGBTQ Therapy Assoc, CHADD, IOCDF, and have served on the Pacific Autism Ctr for Ed Advisory Board.
When not reviewing psychological assessments with parents or role playing social skills with youth, you’ll find me cycling, downhill skiing, playing tennis, playing drums, or trying to hit a golf ball.
