Matthew Tolman
Matthew Tolman, Psy.D is a licensed Clinical Psychologist that has worked in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, and community mental health clinics. He has also worked at UVA’s Counseling and Psychological Services providing psychotherapy to undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Tolman specializes in treating children, adolescents, and adults using an approach that integrates classic and modern psychodynamic theory with contemporary approaches including family systems, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-based treatment. In his approach, Dr. Tolman strives to help individuals to utilize their strengths to overcome painful emotional symptoms and negative behavioral patterns that can be associated with life transitions, loss, trauma, personality development and interpersonal difficulties. When working with children, play therapy is often a key component of Dr. Tolman’s treatment as well as frequent parent consultation. Dr. Tolman is coauthor of the book, Psychodynamic Perspectives on Eating Disorders.
