Richard Newman
My clinical practice focuses on children (as young as six years), adolescents, and adults. Clients typically come to me because of problems involving depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, attention deficit-hyperactivity, difficulty regulating emotions, and dysfunctional relationships. Problems are often related to stress at home (such as divorce, economics, and issues of parenting). For children and adolescents, in particular, problems may also be related to stress at school (such as peer pressure, bullying, difficulty with friendships, learning difficulty, and motivational problems). In addition to therapy, I give presentations to groups of parents and teachers on ways to help individuals cope with stress.
I'm Professor Emeritus at UC Riverside. My research and teaching have focused on the importance---when individuals face diverse challenges and problems---of seeking help from others. My academic experience has helped foster a strong belief that good therapy is based on scientific evidence of "what works."
Over 30 years of clinical and university experience give me a broad perspective on social, emotional, developmental, and educational challenges of children and adolescents as well as issues and problems faced by adults. This perspective---coupled with a warm, empathic personal style---have helped my clients reach their goals in therapy.
