As a clinician, I have taken deliberate steps to become a competent and well-rounded professional. Over the past 20 years, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including clinician, preschool through high school age students, administration, as a lead psychologist, supervision. and private practice. I have enjoyed being able to work with children as young as three, and all ages up through young adulthood. Throughout my career, I have increased my knowledge through additional training in therapeutic modalities, crisis response, parent training, and assessment. In addition, I have been able to work with children and families from diverse backgrounds.
As an instructor, my experiences are diverse. My overall philosophy of teaching reflects my experiences in teaching both graduate and undergraduate students, but also in my training as a psychologist. In my courses, I promote critical thinking of course content through the use of discussion and small-group interaction among students. I believe that students benefit from a diversity of thinking that sometimes challenges their own way of thinking. Furthermore, I have promoted student autonomy in my courses by giving them choices on various projects when appropriate. In line with contemporary research findings, I have increased student motivation by empowering them to take responsibility for certain aspects of their own learning. Finally, I have had the opportunity to conduct 100s of workshops for current clinicians, graduate students, parents, and community members on a variety of topics.
