About:

elizabeth marekI am a clinical psychologist with a B.A. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from New York University. While in private practice, I have also worked at The School at Columbia University for more than 16 years, supporting children, teaching social/emotional skills, and consulting with parents and teachers to enable all children to succeed in school.
ADULTS: I believe that meaningful change occurs in the context of a trusting relationship. I practice active listening, and use an integrative approach to promote insight and self-advocacy.
CHILDREN: I have over 20 years of experience working with children who struggle with anxiety, behavioral problems, learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum disorders, social problems, and depression, as well difficult life issues such as divorce and bereavement. I have experience working in a variety of modalities, including cognitive-behavioral (CBT), psychodynamic, family therapy, parent-child interaction therapy and play-based psychotherapy, and use an individualized approach targeted to meet the needs of the child and family.
ADOLESCENTS: Teenagers respond best to treatment within a relationship built on trust, honesty and understanding. I enjoy working with adolescents, and have had success in building rapport with adolescents who are initially resistant to counseling.
PARENT CONSULTATION AND BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT: I enjoy collaborating with parents and working together to find ways to manage challenging behaviors.
PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT: I offer full psychological and psycho-educational assessments, as well as providing guidance for parents, educators and schools, regarding how best to facilitate the development of children struggling with language difficulties, processing weaknesses, nonverbal learning disabilities, reading problems/dyslexia, academic issues, autistic and pervasive developmental disorders, emotional difficulties, executive functioning deficits, and ADHD.
