Ozlem Bekar
I am specialized in working with both adults and children. Having specialized in both adult and child psychotherapy allows me to deeply understand your challenges from multiple perspectives.
I received my doctorate (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology from The New School in New York City and my M.A. in Psychology from SUNY, Albany. Throughout my graduate training I worked in major hospital clinics in New York City, including Beth Israel Medical Center, South Beach Psychiatric Center, and Lenox Hill Hospital. In addition, I coordinated the New School Psychological Assessment Services, and worked closely with college students. I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, further specializing in trauma treatment. Currently, I am affiliated with Lenox Hill Hospital where teach and supervise doctoral students.
As a firm believer in individualized, client-centered treatment, my clinical training and practice includes a variety of theoretical approaches that I use flexibly. My primary approach is based in psychodynamic psychotherapy, which I believe creates the most durable change and improvement in my clients’ lives. At the same time I effectively utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) whenever it is needed. Finally, I have extensive experience in play therapy and parent-child psychotherapy, which have been shown to be effective with behavioral problems and internalizing problems such as anxiety and depression in children.
My practice and research go hand-in-hand. I have conducted clinical research at the Center for Attachment Research at the New School on the relationship between parents and children between 2010 and 2016. And since 2017 I have run a funded research program on perinatal anxiety and depression at Lenox Hill Hospital.
If you have any questions about my practice, I would be happy to provide a 15-minute phone consultation to understand if I might be a good fit for you.
